West will invite the spade game and East, whose hand is mostly aces and kings will consider the invitation and will subsequently accept it. She holds a "good 16."

Declarer has a little work to do to bring home 10 tricks. She will need to ruff a diamond or two in dummy and she needs to solve the club suit.

It helps that South will lead a high diamond. She will continue the suit for lack of anything better to play. After the defense has taken two diamond tricks declarer will have an easier tome to making her game contract. She can win a spade shift (no other shift is better) and ruff a diamond. She can then lead a club toward her hand and on this layout she will not make a mistake. (North will either take her ace or the ♣Q will appear.)

The opening lead of a spade will make declarer work a little harder to make her contract however she will still prevail. You can follow the line yourself. Allow Sotuh to lead a spade and north to continue spades after declarer plays a diamond. Declarer will still come to 10 tricks.

South has a very difficult opening bid. It's difficult to show two-suited hands which contain a lot of HCPs. If South opens 2♣ she will use a lot of bidding space to she both diamonds and clubs.

One option is to lie a bout her hand and open 3NT some play as showing 22 - 24 HCPs however that rally distorts the nature of her hand and is not a bid we'd recommend.

Perhaps the least of all evils is to open 1♣. A rebid of 2 by South is a reverse and shows at least 17 HCPs so when South rebids 3 she should be showing at least 20 HCPs.

North may explore for a club slam and if she does the partnership may get to 7♣. If North bids 3NT at her second turn South will likely blast to 6NT. Some Souths may pursuit a minor suit slam however at matchpoints the notrump slam may be the best spot at that form of scoring.

In 6NT declarer will have to take the heart finesse unless East leads a low spade. (East should not lead spades against a slam from her holding.)

In a club slam, declarer can ruff the third round of diamonds after drawing trump. Her suit will be good and she has aces and kings to cover her other cards.

  1. 2 Keycards without the Q

West might fall out of her seat when East opens a perfect Weak two in hearts.

West can check for aces or keycards according to your agreement and will likely settle into the heart slam.

Declarer will win the opening lead, draw trump, cash high spades and ruff a spade to come to 13 tricks.

North will open and although she has 14 HCPs, East has no action over the 1♣ opening bid.

South has spades and no interest in any other suit. She should jump to the spade game.

Even if the defense starts with three clubs declarer has a chance to make her contract. She needs to solve the spade suit. Best is to get to dummy and lead the ♠Q.

If East plays a fourth round of clubs declarer should ruff with the ♠J. When this holds she knows the king is in the East hand and she must hope the ♠10 is singleton. She can get to dummy and lead the ♠Q, smothering the ♠10.

If the defense does not start with three club tricks, declarer must still solve the spade suit however she will be feeling less pressure.

While few pairs will get to the spade game there will be 11 tricks at most tables. Declarer can win the opening lead, cash her red aces, ruff diamonds in hand and clubs in dummy.

A spade lead will hold declarer to 10 tricks however we do not expect many North players to start a spade when they have a seemingly natural club lead.

North will open hearts and South will show her spades. EW will interfere at least to the five level. When North bods 5♠, South knows they have a double fit. Since she has diamond controls and a singleton club we feel strongly South should bid the slam.

The defense will get their club trick however declarer has the remaining tricks. There is no need to play the board out. Declarer can table her hand and claim explaining she will draw trump first.

North will start her singleton spade. South will win and return the suit, ruffed by North, however North will be ruffing a losing spade. North will return a diamond and ruff a third round of spades. She will then gain the lead, draw one round of trump and she can ruff her fourth spade in dummy. (North will be out of trump at this point.)

It's not a pretty auction however as a passed hand North has great support for partner. Her high clubs look like a source of tricks and she has trump support. We think she should shoot to 4.

West has an awkward holding from which to lead. We don't expect many West players to start a diamond however on this board she will strike gold and her side will take two diamond tricks.

On an other lead declarer can win, draw trump and discard her losing diamonds on dummy's good clubs. She can lead the ♠10 from dummy and when the finesse works she will ahve 13 tricks.

We expect three overtricks to be the common result on this board.

EW have an easy time to their spade game.

East can win the opening lead, draw trump and lead a club toward the board, finessing the ♣Q. She can then cash the ♣A and when the king drops she knows to take the ruffing finesse against North. She can return to dummy to discard her hearts on the good clubs.

2♠Pass3♠All pass

South is almost too good for a Weak Two Bid in hearts she has to get into the action. West has an easy overcall and the next decision belongs to East.

If East devalues her ♣K she will pass and West will play in the spade partial at the two level. If East help the ♣4 as her singleton she would pass however there is a lure holding a singleton king. There is always the chance that could be a working card.

North will lead a heart. It matters not whether declarer plays the ace from dummy. The defense will win one heart trick and a heart ruff.

The defense will also win one spade, one diamond and one club.
